Ongdal-Saem Agreement to Prevent Heat-Related Ailments among Sanitation Workers

These days, the heat is rampant enough to make the phrase ‘cheoseo magic’ meaningless (cheoseo magic is a Korean phrase that stands for the magical transformation of hot summer weather into cool weather because of fall). In this heat, sanitation workers work hard to collect household waste and clean the streets every day. Paris Baguette Store Owners’ Association Yeosu Branch has been making a refreshing promise, since July of this year, for the sanitation workers responsible for the cleanliness of the city.
Ongdal-saem Agreement implemented by Paris Baguette Store Owners’ Association Yeosu Branch to prevent heat-related ailments among sanitation workers
The Ongdal-saem Agreement is an agreement between the Paris Baguette Store Owners’ Association Yeosu Branch and the Yeosu Urban Management Corporation. It is a campaign in which sanitation workers are provided ice-cold water when visiting Paris Baguette stores in Yeosu from July to September. In the hot and humid summer, sanitation workers who do most of their work outdoors are prone to heat-related ailments. This campaign was implemented to protect the health of sanitation workers working outdoors. Oh Gil-seong, store owner of Paris Baguette Suncheon Eiffel Store, which participated in the Ongdal-saem Agreement, said, “I hope that by sharing ice-cold water, as the name Ongdal-saem suggests (Ongdal-saem means a small spring in Korean), sanitation workers who are tired from the heat can quench their thirst and take a cool break for a while.” He expressed his hope that this agreement will serve as an opportunity to spread awareness and consideration for the community.

Paris Baguette Yeosu Hakdong Branch shows warmth in its neighborhood through the Ongdal-saem Agreement
All Paris Baguette stores located in Yeosu are participating in the Ongdal-saem Agreement. Once the value and purpose of the agreement became known, all stores expressed their intention to participate. Jang Ari, store owner at Paris Baguette Yeosu Hakdong Store, said, “I am always grateful to the sanitation workers who clean the road in front of the store,” and added that, “I am happy that I can help a little by providing ice water to the sanitation workers.
Through this campaign, heartwarming reviews from sanitation workers who visited Paris Baguette stores are pouring in. Kang Myeong-seung, a sanitation worker who visited the Paris Baguette Yeosu Hakdong Store, said, “I move around a lot during work, so it is not feasible to carry ice water, but thanks to Paris Baguette’s campaign, drinking water has become easier. Thank you for opening a campaign with a good cause.”
